Airport assistance in Vietnam: request the help you actually need
Arrange airline mobility assistance for a Vietnam journey by describing the help needed, checking each operator and confirming the airport handover.

The short answer
Request mobility assistance from the operating airline before travel, describing the practical help needed through the airport and on boarding. Do not reduce every need to a vague request for a wheelchair. Vietnam Airlines publishes different service arrangements and advance requirements for different circumstances. Confirm the request for every sector and ask where assistance begins and ends. This is service-planning guidance, not a medical assessment or a guarantee that an unconfirmed request will be available.
Describe the journey, not a label
Explain whether the traveler can walk through the terminal, manage steps and move to the aircraft seat independently. State whether they are travelling alone or with a companion. These details help the airline identify the suitable service rather than guessing from the word wheelchair. If circumstances change after booking, update the request. A service chosen for a short terminal walk may not address a later itinerary involving another terminal or a different boarding arrangement.
Check the applicable advance requirement
Vietnam Airlines’ reduced-mobility page separates service categories and, in some cases, requirements for flights to or from the United States from other journeys. Do not turn a deadline quoted for one category into a universal rule for every passenger. Contact the airline early with the itinerary and the requested assistance, then ask what information remains outstanding. If it directs you to a specific service form, complete that process rather than assuming a free-text booking remark is the confirmation.
Confirm the operator on each sector
Codeshare guidance from ANA explains that the operating partner’s rules apply to assistance-related operational services. A ticket sold under one airline’s number may therefore need coordination with another carrier. Ask whether the request is confirmed on each flight, including the domestic sector inside Vietnam. If a schedule change moves you to a partner, recheck the assistance status. A confirmed seat on a replacement aircraft is not the same question as a confirmed service arrangement.
Discuss your own mobility equipment
If bringing a wheelchair or another mobility aid, provide the dimensions, weight and relevant battery information requested by the airline. Do not assume it can be handled like an ordinary suitcase or that a battery is acceptable because another flight accepted it previously. Ask where the equipment is handed over and returned. Keep essential operating instructions available for staff, and resolve the carrier’s documentation questions before travel rather than attempting to settle them during a rushed connection.
Connect the airport service to ground transport
Confirm the airport meeting point and where the airline assistance finishes, then arrange the next vehicle to suit the traveler’s actual needs. Do not assume an ordinary hotel pickup includes help beyond the driver’s stated service. For an onward journey outside Hanoi, consider the luggage and any equipment when choosing the vehicle and rest stops. Clear handover instructions between the airline, companion and driver can make the arrival more manageable without promising assistance that no provider has agreed to supply.
