Leaving from Saigon Railway Station: a calm departure plan
Prepare for a departure from Saigon Railway Station with the right station, e-ticket, carriage details and onward plan for an overnight Vietnam train.

The short answer
Ga Sai Gon is the national railway departure station, not the city’s Ben Thanh metro station or a long-distance bus terminal. Check the station printed on your ticket, save the address and arrive with the passenger and coach details ready. The railway’s current booking and transport guidance takes priority over old holiday advice.
Give the station its full name
Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon, Ga Sai Gon and Ben Thanh can appear together in a visitor’s search results, but they do not name the same boarding place. Show the railway station name and ticket to the person arranging your transfer. Check the route from your accommodation before departure day. A pin for a ticket agency or a metro entrance will not get you to the national train.
Finish the ticket check before leaving the hotel
Read the departure date, time, train number, coach and seat or berth. For an overnight journey, also confirm the arrival date at your destination. Save the actual ticket offline and keep the required identification accessible. If someone else booked for you, obtain the usable passenger ticket rather than only the order number in their account. Resolve obvious spelling or journey errors before reaching the boarding area.
Allow for the road approach
Saigon’s street journey is part of the departure, even when the station looks close on a map. Leave room for traffic, rain and finding the correct entrance with luggage. The metro’s Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien line is not a direct station shuttle. If combining modes, calculate the final road or walking connection separately; the time displayed for a rail segment is not the complete hotel-to-platform transfer.
Follow the departure information at the station
Check the board and listen for the instructions for your own train. When boarding opens, match the carriage and place printed on the ticket rather than entering the first coach that looks available. Ask staff if you cannot identify the correct position. Keep bags out of the circulation space while waiting, particularly when several departures bring families and luggage into the same part of the station.
Prepare for the next morning too
Departure planning is more useful when it includes arrival. Save the hotel or meeting address at the far end and consider what an early arrival means for transport and room access. Keep valuables and essentials in a small reachable bag overnight. If the itinerary changes, use the current railway conditions for any amendment or refund; a past Tet campaign does not establish the rules for your particular ticket.
If your accommodation is arranging a departure transfer, share the train number and departure time together with the station name. Make clear that the time on the ticket is when the train leaves, not when you want the car to collect you. Agree the pickup accordingly, allowing space for the journey and station procedures.
Questions travellers ask
Is Ben Thanh metro station the national railway station?
No. Use the station shown on the intercity train ticket and plan the separate journey to Ga Sai Gon.
What if a travel agent has the booking on their phone?
Obtain your actual passenger ticket and journey details in a form you can show independently, together with the identification required by the railway.
