Hue and Hoi An: How to Divide Four or Five Days
Divide four or five days between Hue and Hoi An with realistic arrival time, a deliberate transfer plan and contrasting heritage experiences.

The short answer
With four or five days for Hue and Hoi An, protect time for the transfer between them and give each city a different role. Hue suits a focused imperial-history stay; Hoi An adds a port-town setting and optional countryside or coast time.
Count usable days rather than hotel nights
Your arrival may consume part of the first day and the journey between the two destinations uses another block. Lay those movements on the calendar before adding attractions. Four nights do not automatically produce five complete sightseeing days. If a flight or train arrives late, plan an easy first evening instead of assigning a major heritage visit that depends on ideal timing.
Give Hue a clear focus
Use Hue for the imperial centre, selected tombs and river-related context. A compact stay can work when you choose carefully, but trying to add every monument makes it less coherent. Place the Imperial City and outer tomb circuit in separate blocks if possible. Include meals and rest as real parts of the plan rather than treating them as gaps to be filled while driving.
Decide whether the transfer is an experience
A direct transfer and a scenic Hai Van journey occupy different amounts of time and energy. If the road trip includes viewpoints and stops, give it a proper place in the itinerary. Do not schedule it as a minor chore between two full sightseeing programmes. Confirm the route, vehicle, luggage handling and final accommodation access before treating the timing as settled.
Let Hoi An provide contrast
Spend a daylight block understanding the historic streets, then decide whether the remaining time should go toward My Son, countryside activities or the coast. You do not need every option. An unhurried return to the town at a different time of day can add more than another distant excursion. Choose one outside-the-centre activity that reflects your interests rather than following a universal list.
Connect central and northern Vietnam deliberately
If the wider trip continues to Hanoi, Ha Long or Cat Ba, allow for the interregional journey instead of treating the destinations as adjacent. A Cat Ba forest-and-bay stay can add a different landscape after the heritage cities. Enquire only when the travel dates and transfer chain are clear; do not add a booking link merely because another destination is part of the same country.
Remove one item before adding another night
If the itinerary feels crowded, first decide what matters least rather than immediately adding more accommodation changes. You might prefer one carefully chosen tomb, a direct transfer or a single outside-town Hoi An outing. The freed time can improve the experiences you keep. A good four- or five-day plan does not attempt to imitate a longer holiday at double speed; it selects a coherent set of moments that make the two destinations feel distinct.
Questions travellers ask
Is four days enough for both cities?
It can provide a selective introduction if arrival and transfer time are counted realistically.
Should I include the beach and My Son?
Choose according to your time and interests; both are separate additions to the old-town experience.
