Vietnam accommodation registration: the July 2026 rules visitors should know
Understand Vietnam accommodation registration after the July 2026 circular, what hosts must do and why a pre-arrival airport form does not replace it.

The short answer
Circular 87/2026/TT-BCA took effect on 24 July 2026 and updates how foreigners’ temporary residence information is declared and received. Visitors should provide accurate passport and entry details to the accommodation operator and ensure the stay is registered. The ministry’s October reminder says electronic declaration is made immediately on arrival; paper procedures have their own notification and delivery requirements. This accommodation duty is separate from an airport pre-arrival form and from the time you are permitted to remain in Vietnam.
Read the new circular’s commencement
The Official Gazette records Circular 87 as issued on 9 June 2026 and effective on 24 July. The dates differ, so an older accommodation guide may describe the previous procedure even when it appears in a current search. Visitors do not need to operate the host’s account themselves to understand the practical task: give the responsible accommodation manager accurate information promptly and ask whether the current stay has been declared through the appropriate system.
Provide the passport actually used for entry
Give the accommodation operator the document used to enter Vietnam and the relevant admission information. A different passport from the same dual-national traveller can create an inconsistent residence record. Check names and dates when the host asks you to verify details, and include every overnight guest who needs registration. A booking profile is a commercial record and may omit people or use abbreviated names; it should not be assumed to contain everything required for the official declaration.
Understand electronic and paper timing separately
The ministry’s 13 October reminder says electronic declaration should be completed immediately when the foreign guest arrives. For paper declaration, information is first sent promptly to commune-level police through an appropriate communication method, followed by the form within 12 hours, or 24 hours in remote areas. Do not flatten those steps into advice that every host can simply wait until the next day. Ask who is responsible when arriving late or staying somewhere with limited reception staffing.
Check private and changing accommodation
Do not assume registration only matters at a large hotel. When staying with a host or in a private residence, establish who will arrange the local declaration rather than assuming the booking platform does it. Give the new accommodation the relevant details when you move during the holiday. Keep the actual address and dates in a private itinerary; this also makes it easier to explain where you stayed if an administrative or passport problem later requires an accurate travel history.
Keep registration separate from permission to stay
An accommodation declaration records a location; it does not extend a visa, correct an expired entry permission or replace the PAI airport form. If the host notices a document problem, address the immigration issue through the competent authority rather than treating a successful hotel check-in as confirmation that everything is lawful. Keep the departure deadline visible alongside the room booking. Extending the hotel reservation may be commercially easy while extending immigration permission involves a separate decision and procedure.
Questions travellers ask
Does my airport declaration register every hotel stay?
No. Accommodation registration is a separate procedure through the responsible host or operator.
Does a longer room booking extend my visa?
No. The commercial booking does not change immigration permission.
